Legislature President Yu Shyi-kun says he hopes that the United States will make “bigger moves” to curb Chinese provocation. His call came Monday during an interview.

Yu’s comments came one day after 15 Chinese military planes entered Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Sunday. It was the largest single-day incursion so far this year. It followed on the heels of a major incursion on Saturday, which saw 13 Chinese warplanes enter Taiwan’s ADIZ.

Taiwan responded to the incursions by dispatching aircraft to patrol the country’s airspace. The military also broadcast warning messages, and deployed air defense missile systems to monitor the incursions.

Yu said China’s frequent provocations are aimed at testing Washington’s attitudes toward Taiwan under a new US President -- Joe Biden -- who took office last week.

Yu urged Beijing to be rational, but he also said he hopes Washington will take “bigger moves” to stop China’s bullying.

On Saturday, the US State Department called on China to “cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan”. It also said Washington will deepen ties with what it called “democratic Taiwan.”
