Yushan National Park has set up equipment to keep an eye on Formosan black bears in the area. They've been spotted rummaging through trash cans and living spaces, and so park officials are trying to get a closer look at them.
That's a momma bear with her two cubs. The little bear is curious what's inside the trap. A tunnel has been set up to observe bears in the area - and these bears look healthy.
This male bear was also curious about the area, sniffing to figure out what's going on. In the past three months, the Tataka Area of the Yushan National Park has taken footage of at least six different Formosan black bears, male and female, young and old.
Park official Kuo Chen-fen says there are many signs of bears going through trash cans, so the park wanted to get to know the bears, particularly in the northwestern area.
The bears have gotten into trash and also damaged accommodations in the area and overturned cabinets. Formosan black bears are an important part of Taiwan's ecology, and they've only showed up in the western area of the park in the past five years. That's why park officials are keeping an eye on them.
