When it comes to drama, most Taiwanese like to watch the latest hit on Korean TV. But recent footage of a hunt in the forests of Yilan shows that sometimes nature can be just as gripping.
It’s like something out of a David Attenborough documentary. Three yellow-throated martens leap in slow motion, chasing a muntjac through the Yilan forests. Local resident Kao Shou-ch'eng is gobsmacked.
He says he lives in the mountains and he has never seen hunting captured on film like this.
The incredible images capture the martens in tight pursuit of a terrified-looking Reeves’ muntjac, a kind of small deer. Forestry representative Ch'en Kuan-wei explains.
He says they circle their prey before chasing it to exhaustion. Then they attack.
The footage from Yilan has proved a hit online. That has prompted the Forestry Bureau to urge visitors to drive slowly. They say that way, drivers can prevent collisions and catch a glimpse of local wildlife.
