Water shortages that have long plagued Hsinchu Science Park in northern Taiwan will no longer be an issue. That’s after the completion of a pipeline project that will transport a large amount of water to the northwestern county.

The water pipes stretch over 26 kilometers from the neighboring Taoyuan City and have more than doubled the capacity to 200,000 tons of water a day. That will bring much-needed water to the Hsinchu Science Park, which is the hub of Taiwan’s hi-tech industry and home to the world’s largest computer chipmaker: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

President Tsai Ing-wen inspected the new pipeline on Monday. She said the project is significant for Taiwan’s national development. The president said it will stabilize industrial and household water supplies in Hsinchu. She also said that it will boost investor confidence and industrial development, which will, in turn, stimulate the economy.

Hsinchu County Commissioner Yang Wen-ke called the project a turning point. It’s been nearly two decades since the issue of transporting water from Taoyuan to Hsinchu was first broached.
