VIDEO: Year-end bonus hits 8-year low
A survey released by a job bank shows that the average year-end bonus for employees hits an 8-year low.

A survey released by a job bank shows that the average year-end bonus for employees hits an 8-year low. The bonus is only slightly higher than a month’s salary. What’s even worse, those who work in the tourism or hospitality industries will get even less or nothing.

The survey also found that 82% of employees have yet to receive their bonus, and that 28% of the companies will hand out the bonus the day before the Lunar New Year holiday.

What’s your line of work? When it comes to a year-end bonus, count yourself lucky if you work in the insurance industry. Business has been booming because people are willing to take out insurance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An insurance saleswoman Winnies says because of growth in sales, the year-end bonus she gets is double that of last year.

The hi-tech industry also saw its business grow last year, thanks to new technologies and online shopping. Tech companies are generous too,  handing out a bonus that is, on average, about a month and a half salary.

Not everyone is happy, though. The pandemic has dealt a heavy blow to the tourism industry and the service sector. Ms. Yen, a ticketing saleswoman, said she doesn’t get a bonus this year. Yen said it’s hardly surprising because pay cuts and unpaid leave have been in place since last October.
