Legislature President Yu Shyi-kun says Taiwan is willing to work with participating countries of the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union (APPU) to defend against totalitarian countries. Yu was speaking on Tuesday at the video conference of the 50th APPU meeting.

Yu said Taiwan shares common values in democracy and freedom with APPU member countries. He said it is through working together that the union can resist the ambitions of totalitarian states to dominate the Asia Pacific region through military, economic, technological and diplomatic means.

Yu said Taiwan is willing to cooperate with countries in the Indo-Pacific region to protect freedom and human rights, and to promote regional prosperity and development.

The APPU was established in Japan in 1965. Its predecessor was Asian Parliamentarians’ Union (APU). In 1980, the members decided to expand to include emerging countries in the Asia Pacific and changed the name to Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union (APPU).
