The foreign ministry says the Taiwan Office it set up in the South American nation of Guyana has commenced operations.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Joanne Ou said Monday that the office was established pursuant to an agreement that Taiwan signed with Guyana on January 11.

Ou said that the Taiwan Office in the country began early stage work on January 15. Ou also said if Guyana plans to set up its own representative office in Taiwan, it will enjoy the same treatment and status.

US State Department official Julie Chung welcomed the office’s establishment. Chung tweeted that this “milestone will benefit both partners and advance security, democratic values and prosperity in the region.”

Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. It has a population of nearly 800,000. In 2019, Taiwan exported goods worth US$4.2 million to Guyana and imported products from the country worth about US$3.6 million.
