The US State Department says its One China policy has not changed. Spokesperson Ned Price made the statement in response to a question during a press conference on Wednesday.
The One China policy is a diplomatic position that says there is only one Chinese government. That’s instead of recognizing the governments of both China and Taiwan. Taiwan’s official name is the Republic of China.
Two weeks ago, the Biden administration released its first statement defining the new president’s position on Taiwan and China. That statement did not mention the One China policy. However, it did signal continuity with the China policy of previous administrations. The statement called for Beijing to “cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure” and “engage in meaningful dialogue” with Taiwan.
