Chinese interference scuttles plan to open Taiwan office in Guyana
Plans scrapped: Guyana has abrogated an agreement with Taiwan that would have led to the establishment of a Taiwanese representative office in the country.

The South American nation of Guyana has announced it is cancelling an agreement it signed with Taiwan that would have led to the establishment of a Taiwanese representative office in the country. That’s after China warned the country to “correct its mistake”.

The foreign ministry had only announced the establishment of the office on Thursday.

On Friday, the Presidential Office condemned China’s interference. Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang said that Beijing’s move to block the office’s establishment is unreasonable. Chang said that the move will not help cross-strait ties or China’s global image.

Chang also said that China’s interference will only serve to show the international community the true colors of China’s communist leadership once more, and that it will turn Beijing’s recent assertion that China opposes the strong bullying the weak into an international joke.

Chang referred to Taiwan by its official name, the Republic of China, saying that it is a sovereign nation and a force for good in the international community. He said that China’s actions will not lead it to shrink from the world.
