The Lunar New Year holidays are a time for people to stay home with family and relax. But not everybody gets time off work. Police officers stay on duty throughout the holidays to keep people safe. One other person that was on duty this week: the president.
It’s the first day of the Lunar New Year. President Tsai Ing-wen arrives at a police station, bright and early, to thank the police officers who are on duty throughout the holiday.
This is no ordinary police station, though. It’s located in the same district as Taiwan’s presidential office, so the officers keep a close eye on President Tsai. Today, she’s watching out for them, delivering fruit and snacks to the police on duty.
Tsai thanks them for the important role they’ve played during the pandemic. She says Taiwan has been recognized for its excellent prevention measures, and the police have played a key role tracking down quarantine violators and helping health officials trace contacts of COVID patients. Tsai pledges the government’s full support for the police.
Officers at the station present Tsai with a personalized card with a cartoon of the president in a police uniform. They wish Tsai a happy Lunar New Year, saying they hoped her pets got a lot to eat over the holidays.
In response, the president says that her pets are due for a diet.
