Taiwanese flag carrier China Airlines is planning two flights to evacuate Taiwanese nationals who wish to return from Myanmar. Myanmar has seen large-scale demonstrations since a military coup on February 1.
Myanmar is home to a Taiwanese business community, with Taiwanese publication Business Weekly counting over 300 Taiwanese companies that have set up shop in the country. In addition, there is a community of Taiwanese citizens with roots in Myanmar’s ethnic Chinese community.
The two flights will bring back Taiwanese nationals from Myanmar’s largest city and former capital, Yangon. They are scheduled for February 21 and 28, respectively.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s representative office in Myanmar is urging citizens in the country to take steps to secure their homes, offices, and factories. The office says that citizens in Myanmar should avoid going out unnecessarily, and especially avoid crowds and the sites of demonstrations.
Citizens in Myanmar and their families back in Taiwan can also call the emergency hotlines of the representative office or the foreign ministry if they need assistance.
