Legislature to focus on amending Constitution in new session
Democratic Progressive Party Caucus Leader Liu Shyh-fang

Work to amend Taiwan’s Constitution is underway in the legislature. Currently, party caucuses have proposed over 40 changes to the Constitution. So far, the only item that has widespread support in the legislature is an amendment to lower the legal age of adulthood to 18. Other proposals include eliminating branches of government, adjusting Cabinet powers, and easing threshold requirements for changing the Constitution.

Democratic Progressive Party Caucus Leader Liu Shyh-fang says the party will work with all levels of government to reach agreements on proposed changes to the Constitution.

Kuomintang Chairman Johnny Chiang says that his party will not support measures that seek to change Taiwan’s flag, national anthem, official designation, or definition. He says that the party will only support changes that will increase the government's capabilities.

The minority New Power Party and the Taiwan People’s Party say they will support lowering the age of majority. However, they realize that threshold requirements for modifying the Constitution are high, and will wait to discuss with other parties before committing to any changes.
