VIDEO: Lanterns light up Taiwan despite cancellation of festival
Lanterns at Taipei's Shinkong Mitsukoshi plaza

Friday is the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the New Lunar Year. Since 1990, Taiwan has held an annual Taiwan Lantern Festival, but this year’s event in Hsinchu has been cancelled due to the pandemic. Some of the installations will be presented for display at a later date, but even so, lanterns can be seen throughout Taiwan to mark the season.

Taiwan's Lantern Festival has been cancelled due to COVID, but that doesn't mean people aren't enjoying the charming symbols of light and good fortune in Taiwan. You can see them all around Taiwan - as enchanting decor in shopping centers, restaurants and even to bring a little luck to workplaces like RTI.

If you'd like to take home your own lovely light, you might want to check out the 100-year old lantern store in the old part of Taipei called Dadaocheng.  You can buy them in a variety of colors, motifs and textures.

I found a one of a kind hand painted one that reminds me of my favorite animal, Felix the cat. Happy Lantern Festival!
