Taiwan is currently participating in an online conference, hosted by Japan, on how to better preserve Pacific Saury stocks. The conference kicked off on Tuesday with eight countries–including Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and China–in participation. The conference is scheduled to last three days.

According to a report done by Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), Japan’s Pacific Saury hauls have been on the decline over the past few years. The conference will seek to address the decline, and how to catch the fish more sustainably.

According to TBS, Japan brought in 29,000 tons of Pacific Saury last year, which is a new low for the country. The Japanese government attributes its dwindling hauls to China and Taiwan ramping up their fishing efforts.
