In advance of International Women’s Day on March 8, the English-language Bangkok Post has named President Tsai Ing-wen as one of its 24 ‘Women of the Year’. The Office of the President responded to the news on Monday saying that President Tsai represents not just herself, but all of Taiwan. It says that the award is yet another example of international praise for Taiwan’s successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President’s Office says that Tsai is grateful for the people of Taiwan, who have worked together and respected pandemic prevention measures. Taiwan’s success fighting the pandemic has allowed its citizens to lead normal lives.
Tsai’s office also points to Taiwan’s economic success, noting that Taiwan had the fastest growing economy in Asia last year, edging out China for the first time in 30 years.
