A Paraguayan television network has honored Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen with the title of “Friendship Hero”. Taiwan’s foreign ministry says that GEN TV gave Tsai the moniker in recognition of her commitment to Taiwan-Paraguay relations. Paraguay is Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in South America.
The network gives the “Friendship Hero” title to non-Paraguayans who help improve the country. President Tsai Ing-wen is the first recipient of the award.
GEN recognized Tsai for assisting Paraguay during the COVID-19 pandemic. It said that Tsai shared Taiwan’s experience and its information on handling the virus during the early stages of the pandemic. GEN also said that Tsai has actively cooperated with Paraguay to help improve the country’s education and social welfare systems.
