The head of Taiwan’s main opposition party, the KMT, says that he is in no hurry to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The KMT tends to have a less China-wary stance than the currently ruling DPP. However, during a Reuters interview on Tuesday, party chair Johnny Chiang called China the biggest threat Taiwan faces. Chiang said Taiwanese people reject China’s “one country, two systems” formula and that this formula has failed in Hong Kong.
He said that now is not the right time for a meeting with Xi Jinping. Chiang said he will only meet with Xi on equal footing, and that mutual dignity is of utmost importance. He said the two should not meet simply for the sake of meeting.
