The chairman of the opposition KMT, Johnny Chiang, says that China is the major threat facing Taiwan. Chiang was speaking during an interview with Reuters on Tuesday.
Chiang said the “one country, two systems” formula proposed by China has “no market in Taiwan.” He also said the chaos in Hong Kong serves a warning for Taiwan, and that it’s impossible for Taiwanese people to change their way of life.
Chiang said he is in no rush to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that any meeting of this kind must have prerequisites such as equality and dignity.
In response to Chiang’s comments, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said cross-strait ties remain critical and complicated. It also accused pro-Taiwan independence forces of creating confrontation and jeopardizing peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait.
