A recent lack of rain has led to a serious water shortage in the northwestern part of Taiwan. The economics ministry is finding ways to ease the shortage, especially for the crucial technology firms based in the region.
2020 was the driest year in 52 years here in Taiwan, and it’s not just the agricultural sector hurting from the resulting drought. The economics ministry has been forced to send rows of water trucks to supply the high-tech firms of Hsinchu Science Park because a lot of the machinery requires constant cooling using water.
Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua says that water pressure has been reduced in the Hsinchu, Miaoli, and Taichung areas to conserve water. The government is calling on people to save water so that the technology sector can continue to function and Taiwan’s economy can stay on track.
