Taiwan not part of China: Mainland Affairs Council

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says Taiwan has never been part of the People’s Republic of China. That came in a statement on Sunday night.

The Taiwan government’s top China policy-making body was responding to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s comment that “there is no room for compromise when it comes to the Taiwan issue.”

Wang was speaking earlier Sunday at a press conference in Beijing for the annual National People’s Congress. He said that Taiwan is an “inalienable part of Chinese territory.” Wang also called on the Biden administration to stick to its “one China” policy.

But the MAC said the Republic of China, which is Taiwan’s official name, is a sovereignty and that Taiwan has never been part of China. The MAC also said Taiwan has the right to engage with the international community and that only the people of Taiwan have the right to decide on the country’s future.

The MAC accused China of coercion and imposing its own perspective on Taiwan.
