The White House says its position on Taiwan remains clear and unchanged. White House Secretary Jen Psaki was speaking on Monday in response to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s comments urging the US administration to not continue the last administration’s practice of “playing with fire” on the Taiwan issue. China sees Taiwan as an inalienable part of China and calls on the US to stop meddling in matters relating to Taiwan and China.
Psaki said that the US will stand by its friends and allies to advance shared prosperity, security and values in the Indo-Pacific region. Psaki also added that the US maintains its long-standing commitments to Taiwan as outlined in the Three Communiques, the Taiwan Relations Act, and the Six Assurances. The three agreements are in place in the absence of official diplomatic ties between Taiwan and the US.
In response to Wang’s warnings, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan government’s top China policy making body, said that Taiwan upholds its national sovereignty and democratic freedom. Taiwan has never been a part of China and has the right to interact with the international community. The MAC also said that only the 24 million people of Taiwan have the right to decide the future of Taiwan.
