Pompeo: Taiwan and US should have more exchanges
Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did an interview with Taiwan's Central News Agency on Tuesday

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pomeo says that Taiwan and the US should have more open exchanges. That came during an interview with Taiwan’s Central News Agency on Tuesday.

Pompeo was Secretary of State under US President Donald Trump. Pompeo is seen as a proponent of strong Taiwan-US ties. He lifted the US’ self-imposed restrictions on relations with Taiwan just days before he left office.

Pompeo said he and his staff looked at the rules dictating how US officials could interact with Taiwan, and called them “crazy.” He said that the rules “made no sense.”

Pompeo said his decision to lift the restrictions would benefit people in Taiwan, China, and the US. He said there was no need for the US to have “clandestine” conversations with Taiwan, and that it was important for the two to have open dialogue.

When asked about the possibility of visiting Taiwan, Pompeo said it would be “a real treat.”
