Taiwan’s New York Representative Office has complained to the UN after the publication of a new map showing Taiwan as part of China. The map shows gender representation in politics around the world, and uses the color red for both Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. That’s despite Taiwan performing vastly better than China with regard to female representation in government.
Taiwan is one of a small minority of countries to have a female head of state - President Tsai Ing-wen. Not only that, but women make up just over 40% of the current legislature this year, setting a record high for the country. That’s a far higher number than in China, where less than a quarter of legislature seats are filled by women.
The new map is the result of a collaboration between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the UN Women. Its release on Wednesday comes ahead of the upcoming 65th Commission on the Status of Women, due to start on Monday.
Taiwan’s New York Representative Office says that a map showing gender representation in politics without Taiwan “cannot be called complete”. The office says that if the UN wants to promote democracy and empower women, it should start by facing the facts about Taiwan.
