Taiwan has not had a lot of rain these last few months, and even an area in western Taiwan that used to have an endless flow of spring water is almost dried up. What measures are some local governments going to take to relieve the drought?
The Longquan Spring in Miaoli County hasn't dried up for years. But now less than 10 cm of water is left there. That’s because Taiwan has faced a lack of rain for months. Residents in the area are scrambling to get the little water that’s pumped up from the spring and fill containers to bring home.
Reservoirs in Miaoli, Hsinchu, Taichung and Tainan have all seen severe drops in water levels.
The local governments of Miaoli and Taichung have decided that next week, they will provide water for five days and then cut off water supply for two days. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen says that further measures will depend on how bad drought conditions get.
