Taiwan’s interior ministry announced on Wednesday that it will ease restrictions on civic groups from Hong Kong and Macau that are hoping to establish presences in Taiwan. This is the first time in over three decades that the interior ministry revised rules on groups from these territories. The interior ministry says it is doing so in order to attract more international civic groups to Taiwan.
The changes will simplify the application process for civic groups from Hong Kong and Macau looking to establish offices in Taiwan. They also lift rules limiting Hong Kong and Macau civic groups to just one office in the country and requiring them to report to local police regularly.
Civic groups from China are still barred from entering Taiwan entirely.
