US to reiterate its stance on cross-strait ties to China: Official

National Security Bureau Director-General Chen Ming-tong says he trusts that Washington will reiterate its long-standing stance on cross-strait issues during upcoming talks with China.

Chen was speaking Thursday at the Legislature. His comments came as the two superpowers prepare to hold talks in Alaska on March 18, the first talks of their kind under the Biden administration.

According to the US State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi.

The State Department has said it will continue pressuring China on issues ranging from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang to human rights and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chen said the Biden administration, to some extent, is in the same vein as the Trump administration when it comes to foreign policy. That is to say, it considers China as a competitor that attempts to undermine the US-led order in place since the end of WWII. Chen said however that the two sides may cooperate with each other on issues such as climate change.
