VIDEO: Taiwan suffers decline in air quality

A recent spell of warm weather has brought many Taiwanese out into the great outdoors. But the lack of strong winds has brought a downside: a drop in air quality.

Taipei 101 disappears in a puff of smoke. But sadly this isn’t some kind of magic trick. It’s air pollution.

Central Weather Bureau forecaster Li Meng-hsuan explains. He says recently the prevailing wind has been light and easterly. That means it isn’t reaching Taiwan’s western side. Because there’s no wind to blow it away, the air pollution stays where it is. That’s why the next three days will see varying yellow, orange, and red-level warnings for all of western Taiwan.

And even the recent warm weather won’t last. Li says a wave of cold air will arrive on Sunday and stay for three days.

With the decline in air quality and approaching cold weather, there’s no better excuse to spend some quality time indoors.
