VIDEO: Miaoli County builds cross-river tunnel for leopard cats
A special tunnel in Miaoli is built just for leopard cats

Taiwan has been trying hard to protect its beautiful leopard cats. Still, some are hit by cars as they try to cross roads. In response, Miaoli County has developed a way to ensure the cats can cross a river while avoiding a dangerous road.

A special tunnel in Miaoli County has been designed for the use of leopard cats and avoids a stretch of road where they could easily be hit by cars. It is the first structure of its kind in Taiwan.

The tunnel is a big corrugated pipe that’s 30 meters long.  The inside is lined with sawdust to make it look natural—this way the wild cats will be less hesitant to go inside.

A hidden camera has caught sight of a leopard cat cautiously checking out the structure at the entrance. In order to prevent bigger animals like dogs from entering and attacking the leopard cats, railings have been placed at both ends of the tunnel so that only animals with small bodies like leopard cats can get through. Hopefully more leopard cats will become familiar with the tunnel and come to use it.
