Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the US government will continue providing for Taiwan’s defense in light of possible military aggression from China. Clinton was speaking on Monday at a webinar on US foreign policy sponsored by the non-profit think tank Council on Foreign Policy.
Clinton spoke about the United States’s decades-long policy of strategic ambiguity toward the situation in the Taiwan Strait, and whether there should be a shift to strategic clarity. She said that the US should carefully consider China’s recent comments on Taiwan. If not handled carefully, she said, Beijing could one day take military action against Taiwan.
The former secretary of state also urged the US to continue investing in the military and the economy, and to work together with other countries to restrain China.
Clinton also said that Taiwan remains a ‘serious challenge’ for the United States and Taiwan should be a part of the overall strategic framework for dealing with China.
