VIDEO: First in Taiwan: Songshan Airport testing facial scans
Taipei's Songshan Airport testing facial scans to expedite check-in and boarding

Songshan Airport could become the first airport in Taiwan to use facial scans to expedite check-in and boarding. Although it is only a trial run for now, authorities say it’s a big step forward in promoting safe tourism in the post-COVID era.

Starting on March 24, passengers at Taipei’s Songshan Airport will be able to board international flights using facial scans. That’s part of a six-month trial period. The technology will not only speed up the process and reduce manpower, it’s also contact-free – ideal in the time of COVID.

The new technology will eliminate the need to pull out your boarding pass and ID – all that information will be available just by scanning your face. It will also check your temperature and send the information to the plane you are boarding. All data will automatically be deleted after an hour has passed. For now, the process is voluntary.

Transportation Minister Lin Chia-lung was at the airport on Tuesday to try out the new system. He said the new service offers a three-in-one convenience, as it can be used during check-in, in customs and at boarding. Lin says it will become a vital feature of post-pandemic travel.

The minister says that if the trial run is successful, the service will be introduced at airports throughout Taiwan.
