As calls mount for countries to boycott the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, Premier Su Tseng-chang says that Taiwan will consider the actions of other countries and take appropriate measures.

Human rights groups are calling on countries to protest the use of forced labor and Uyghur concentration camps in Xinjiang by boycotting the Winter Olympics, scheduled to open in Beijing on February 4, 2022.  Reports have said that China will try to lobby Taiwan and keep it from participating in any boycott.

When asked about the issue at the legislature on Tuesday, Su said, “We disapprove of China’s many human rights abuses, and its suppression of the people of Hong Kong. We will consider actions in the international arena and take appropriate measures.”

Premier Su said China has continually tried to block Taiwan’s freedoms, parity and meaningful participation in the international arena.  The premier highlighted a statement from visiting Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. who said that China’s suppression of Taiwan is not what a responsible superpower should do.

The premier also cited that China has been sending military planes near Taiwan and squeezing Taiwan’s international space. This has led to bad feelings among the Taiwanese people about China and is not helpful for cross-strait relations.
