VIDEO: First bluefin tuna caught this year by fisherman in Pingtung

A Taiwanese fisherman has caught a bluefin tuna, the island’s first this year. That’s good news for a fishing village in southern Taiwan.

The bluefin tuna caught in southern Taiwan is a big story for Donggang township, a fishing village in Pintung county.

The prized fish is pretty heavy. It definitely didn’t disappoint.  Fishermen there were busy weighing the bluefin tuna. It weighs over 180 kilograms. This is not only the first fish of its kind caught in Pingtung, but also Taiwan’s first this year.

Fishermen Huang Ming-tsai caught the fish in the southwestern part of Hengchun. He couldn’t hide his excitement. Huang said it was a surprise to him as he has been fishing for years. This is the first time he has caught a bluefin tuna.

Bluefin tuna is delicious but expensive. It costed NT$9,000 (US$300) per kilogram last year. A fish association worker said he hopes they can get a higher price than last year.
