Taiwan to work with US in a pragmatic matter: Foreign ministry

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou says that Taiwan will continue cooperating with the United States in a pragmatic manner.

Ou was responding Thursday to media reports that the Biden administration is planning to reexamine guidelines on official exchanges with Taiwan. It is reported that Washington will lift restrictions on contacts between US officials and their Taiwanese counterparts.

Ou said during a Senate confirmation hearing in January, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made it clear that Washington will examine bringing its decades-old guidelines on exchanges with Taiwan in line with the Taiwan Assurance Act. The Taiwan Assurance Act is aimed at deepening Taiwan-U.S. relations. Former US President Donald Trump signed the act into law last December.

Ou said strengthening exchanges and cooperation with Washington is the government’s long-term goal. Ou also said the government will closely monitor Washington’s Taiwan policy.
