Fifty people are dead after a Taroko Express train derailed in eastern Taiwan on Friday. This is one of the deadliest rail accidents in Taiwan’s history. Among the dead is the train’s conductor.
The accident happened shortly before 9:30am on Friday, the first day of the long Tomb Sweeping Day weekend, when many Taiwanese people travel. The train was carrying several hundred passengers at the time.
The accident was the result of a collision between the train and a construction truck that rolled down from a parallel road above the tracks. Reports say that the truck's brakes had not been properly engaged.
All survivors of the accident have been removed from the wreckage.
