Taiwan’s foreign ministry says there’s a very good chance that former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Taiwan this year.
Deputy Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang told lawmakers on Monday that the government is working to make it possible.
Pompeo, who stepped down in January, tweeted about Taiwan on Monday. His words: “As a proponent of freedom, enjoying some Taiwanese dried pineapple. Checkmate.” That’s in reference to China’s sudden ban on imports of Taiwanese pineapples, starting March 1.
Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, responded to Pompeo’s comments with a tweet of her own, saying: “Glad to know that Mike Pompeo likes Taiwanese dried pineapples, which I have been sharing around town.”
