President Tsai Ing-wen says the navy’s first 10,000-ton amphibious transport dock is a milestone in Taiwan’s indigenous shipbuilding. Tsai was speaking Tuesday at a ceremony marking the christening and launching of the vessel in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.
The transport dock is named after Taiwan’s highest mountain Yushan. Tsai said the name is a symbol of the spirit of the armed forces, who are not afraid to take on any challenge or obstacle.
Tsai said the transport dock was designed and built for the country’s defense needs. It will help strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities.
