Taiwan’s Legislature is working to reform Taiwan’s Public Television Act to encompass a broader range of media outlets. Culture Minister Lee Yung-te gave a report to the Legislature on Wednesday to discuss his ministry’s work on the matter.
Lee says that two core issues must be addressed before any meaningful progress can be made. First, Lee says the funding sources for public media outlets must be laid out clearly. He says the Cabinet is in the process of establishing a cultural development foundation that may serve as the ideal platform to allocate funds to public media outlets. However, he says the finer details about the foundation are still getting hashed out.
The second core issue concerns what kind of management structure public media outlets would fall under. Lee says that currently, the government operates several television channels and radio stations, along with the Central News Agency. He says the government needs to decide whether it will adopt a more centralized or decentralized management model when managing these outlets.
