Central Emergency Operation Center to hold meeting on drought
An ongoing drought has had a severe impact on central Taiwan's reservoirs.

The Central Emergency Operation Center will hold a meeting Friday on a drought that has left central Taiwan’s reservoirs at less than 10% capacity.

Already, towns in affected areas are only providing residents with water for five days a week, and there has been media speculation that this could be cut to just four days. During the meeting, officials will take stock of the remaining water supply in affected areas and look at how effective water-saving measures have been.

There has also been concern about the drought’s potential effects on industry. In particular, there are concerns about the water-intensive semiconductor industry because of an ongoing global shortage of semiconductors. However, on Wednesday, Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua told reporters that given the current availability of water, Taiwan’s industrial sector should not feel any impact from the drought.
