An unofficial delegation sent by US President Joe Biden is in Taiwan as a show of continued US support for Taiwan under the Biden administration. The delegation, made up of former US Senator Christopher Dodd and former deputy US secretaries of state Richard Armitage and James Steinberg, arrived in Taipei Wednesday afternoon.
The occasion of the visit is the 42nd anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, the law that forms the basis of the United States’ unofficial ties with Taiwan.
All three of the former officials are close to Biden, and one official says that their visit is a “personal sign” of Biden’s commitment to Taiwan.
On Wednesday, both the foreign ministry and the Presidential Office welcomed the delegation’s visit as a sign of continued US friendship and support.
According to a spokesperson for the Presidential Office, the three visiting former officials will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen early on Thursday. The three are also expected to meet with other senior officials during their stay.
