Taiwan’s representative to the US Hsiao Bi-khim is introducing the world to Hsinchu, the home of delicious stir-fried rice noodles and Taiwan’s high tech industry.
On Monday, she published a video unpacking a box of rice noodles from Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien. The video then features Mayor Lin eating and introducing the local speciality to viewers.
Hsiao also recently made a video introducing Hsinchu and its science park, which is home to key companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest and most advanced chip foundry. She released the video as TSMC was invited to take part in a recent White House summit for the semiconductor industry.
Taiwan’s soft power has been a popular way to attract attention to Taiwan. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently tweeted a picture of himself playing chess and eating some Taiwanese dried pineapple that Hsiao had gifted him during their recent meeting. Pompeo said: “As a proponent of freedom, enjoying some Taiwanese dried pineapple. Checkmate.”
