Taiwan is investing NT$100 million (US$3.6 million) to conduct geological surveys of science parks and metropolitan areas for the next five years.   Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua on Tuesday said the surveys will reveal fault lines and impacts of potential earthquakes.

Two recent earthquakes that occurred in Hualien have raised concerns about the effect quakes have on the semiconductor industry. Wang called for the public to remain calm and not panic about these concerns.

Meanwhile, media outlets asked whether Taiwan’s semiconductor companies would join in the US-Japan cooperation in 5G technology, semiconductors and AI. Wang said Taiwan is already working with the two countries in building a TSMC wafer foundry in the US and a research center in Japan. Wang said many countries will be looking to work with Taiwan at the government level in the area of semiconductors.
