The finance ministry has announced that the Central American Bank for Economic Integration in Honduras has signed an agreement to set up an office in Taiwan. The ministry says this will be the bank’s first branch in Asia. It also says that the move will help revitalize Taiwan’s financial markets and increase Taiwan’s visibility in the international arena.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration aims to promote economic integration and social development in Central America. It currently has 15 member countries, including Taiwan, the biggest shareholder among non-Central American member countries. Taiwan is the Central American bank’s largest capital market in Asia for issuing bonds.

The finance ministry says that as a result, Taiwan is expected to have a permanent chair on the bank’s board of directors.
