The education ministry announced Friday that it will expand its recruitment of English language teaching assistants from the US this year. That’s in light of the government’s goal to make Taiwan a bilingual country by 2030. The new recruitment measures include a scholarship program from Fulbright Taiwan that will recruit 70 new teachers this year to help out at elementary and middle schools.

The ministry said those taking part in the program will need a master’s degree in education or a TESOL certificate.

The education ministry said that its goals include getting at least 50% of second year undergraduates and first year graduate students from 36 benchmark schools to reach at least a B2 proficiency in English by 2030. B2 represents upper intermediate proficiency on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages language proficiency scale.

The ministry also hopes to get at least half of second year undergraduates completing more than 50% of their courses in English by 2030.
