Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), is calling on the government to help India, which is dealing with a huge rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths. The statement came via press release on Monday morning.

India is currently facing its worst weeks yet during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has set new global records for daily cases four days in a row. The country’s most recent figures on Monday showed 352,991 new cases and 2,812 deaths. A serious shortage of oxygen, ventilators and vital medicines is exacerbating the situation.

The KMT says that Taiwan’s government has remained silent while countries like the US, the UK and France are offering support. That’s despite the concern Indian authorities expressed toward Taiwan in the aftermath of the recent train crash in Hualien. The KMT says India has also worked with Taiwan on recent medical research.

The political party is calling for urgent assistance for Taiwanese nationals and diplomats in the country. It also says Taiwan’s government should also use diplomatic channels to determine how to help India deal with the new wave of infections.
