Vice President William Lai says Taiwan and the EU should cooperate in health, biology and supply chains. Lai was speaking Tuesday at the 2021 EU-Taiwan Healthcare Forum.

The forum was organized by the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT). It focused on how public and private sectors can work together to promote a sustainable health care system.

Lai said Taiwan and the EU should strengthen their partnership and prepare for the post-pandemic era together. Over the past year, Lai said, Taiwan has donated medical supplies to many other countries, including some hardest-hit European countries. Lai said Taiwan can help and is helping.

Lai attributed Taiwan’s success in containing the pandemic to the government’s transparency, quick and cautious response as well as its early preparedness. Lai also said democracy is Taiwan’s key to success.

"The key to Taiwan’s successful management lies mainly in its democratic institutions. Democracy is the key to the so-called successful Taiwan model," said Lai.
