Some good news for Taiwan’s parched reservoirs: a rainy weather front has brought some relief for the national water supply. That comes as the country suffers its worst drought in over half a century.
According to the Water Resources Agency, recent rainfall has added 13.18 million tons of water to reservoirs countrywide. Those gains are mostly concentrated in the northern half of the country, including some particularly hard-hit areas like Miaoli County and Taichung. However, authorities say the additional water only amounts to one extra day’s supply.
Shih-men Reservoir in Taoyuan County gained the most, with an additional 4.3 million tons of water added to supplies.
The Water Resources Agency says levels in Taichung County also rose. Deputy Director-General Wang Yi-feng says reservoirs in the area gained around 2.5 million tons of water. That’s enough for around a day and a half of usage.
