The Presidential Office is extending its sincere thanks to French lawmakers after the country’s Senate passed a motion calling for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Spokesperson Xavier Chang’s statement on Friday comes a day after the unanimous vote of support in France’s upper chamber.
The resolution adopted by the Senate says that France should continue to push for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly and the International Civil Aviation Organization. It says that support should also extend to other organizations, including Interpol and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The vote passed by 304 votes to none, with 19 abstentions.
The Presidential Office has thanked France’s Senate for its support. It also singled out Senators Alain Richard and Joël Guerriau for special praise for drafting the resolution. The two senators head up the French-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group.
The office says that the resolution is yet another example of international approval for Taiwan’s success fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and managing its fast-growing economy. It says Taiwan and France share common values of democracy, freedom, and human rights. It also says bilateral cooperation on trade, technology, and energy has grown in recent years. The office says it will continue to strengthen ties with the European nation.
