Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has confirmed media reports of a new command structure for the country’s armed forces. Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng gave details at the Legislature on Monday.
The affected divisions are the Huadong Defense Command, Penghu Defense Command, along with the 6th, 8th and 10th Army Commands. In the event of war, each division is responsible for one of five war zones. Chiu says that from Monday, their names will change to reflect that. That means they’ll be known as War Zones One through Five.
Chiu says that the new names reflect the Defense Ministry’s goal of creating unified military command centers. He says that unified command can only be achieved when the army, navy and air force work in tandem.
Chiu says that the newly-named divisions will have leaders from the army, navy, or air force, depending on the region’s main defensive duty.
