Taiwan records 16 local COVID-19 infections in one day
The Central Epidemic Command Center announced 16 new locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday

Taiwan on Wednesday recorded the largest number of domestic infections since the pandemic began. The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) confirmed 16 new local cases and four imported cases. Health officials are also investigating another case, for a total of 21 new cases on Wednesday.

Three of the new local transmissions are part of an outbreak at a video arcade in Yilan County on Taiwan’s eastern coast. All three came in contact with people at the arcade who were confirmed to have COVID on Tuesday. Authorities have yet to determine the source of the outbreak, which has infected at least eight people.

Ten more local infections announced on Wednesday are connected to a dinner in New Taipei City that was attended by someone with COVID. They include five men and five women between the ages of 50 and 70. Authorities are also still working to determine the source of this outbreak.

The other three local infections announced on Wednesday are women between 50 and 70 years old. Two of the women work in Taipei City’s Wanhua District. Health officials say they are trying to determine whether these infections are related to other chains of infection.

The case announced on Wednesday that is still pending is a China Airlines flight attendant who had contact with an airline pilot confirmed with COVID-19 on May 10. It’s not clear whether it’s an imported or domestic case.
