There are over 1.4 million foreigners registered as residents in China and nearly 160,000 of them are Taiwanese. That’s according to figures China’s State Council Information Office released on Tuesday. The figures are from the national census taken in November and December 2020.

China takes a census once every ten years and uses it as a key tool to devise government policy. This is the seventh time the Council conducted a nationwide census.

In the census 1,430,695 foreigners were registered in China’s 31 provinces. Among them, over 370,000 were from Hong Kong, nearly 56,000 were from Macau and nearly 160,000 were from Taiwan.

Of the foreigners residing in China, over 77,000 stated they entered China for business purposes, over 440,000 came for employment, nearly 220,000 came to study, nearly 420,000 came with plans to reside long-term, while nearly 75,000 came to be with family.
